Follow the exciting footsteps of the Klondike Gold Rush featuring Emerald Lake & Carcross Desert
Today is all about the gold rush, and the insane adventure that over 100,000 people set off on to get to the Yukon. A huge portion of those gold seekers started their arduous journey from the Alaskan coast, in Skagway, and each spent the next 3 months hauling one ton of food and equipment up and over the mountains into Canada. And that was only the first part of their expedition… but we won’t go into that now, your guide will tell you all about it on this road trip!
On route to Skagway, we will make a stop at Mile Canyon, the glorious Emerald Lake, the Carcross desert and of course, Carcross itself. After some free time exploring the restaurants, cafes and artist stores in Carcross, we will continue on to Alaska.
As we continue on the South Klondike Highway, the views get more and more incredible as we head through the southern lakes and into the Coast Mountains, before dropping down to Skagway on the Alaskan coast.
Skagway, once the point of departure for most gold prospectors during the big Klondike Gold Rush, is a colourful medley during summer when guests from around the world stroll around its numerous restaurants, souvenir shops and jewellers. After a quick orientation of the town, you will be set free to explore this historic time capsule for a couple of hours at your own leisure, before we turn around and head back to Whitehorse.
We will pick you up at your hotel at 9 a.m. and head for the coast. In Carcross and Skagway, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a tasty lunch. We will aim to have you back at your hotel in Whitehorse at around 6 p.m.
