Skagway Road Trip: A Journey Where Every Stop Steals the Show
Today is all about the gold rush, and the wild adventure that over 100,000 people set off on to get to the Yukon. For most gold seekers, their arduous journey to the Klondike started from the Alaskan coast, in Skagway. So much of Skagway is still kept in its original style, and it feels like you’ve been transported back in time to Alaska’s wild west. This journey from Whitehorse to Skagway is a thrilling experience that brings history to life. Experience the charm and excitement that await you on this unique route. Our Skagway day trip is the perfect example of the saying “it’s not just the destination, it’s the journey.” This Skagway day tour unfolds across some of the Yukon and Northern British Columbia’s most stunning landscapes, with each stop offering its own unforgettable highlight.
Your adventure begins in Whitehorse, with the first stop at Miles Canyon, where you’ll cross the Yukon River on a scenic suspension bridge stretching over the volcanic rock gorge. From there, we continue to the shimmering Emerald Lake and the Carcross Desert, famously known as the world’s smallest desert. We also visit the charming village of Carcross, where you’ll learn about local First Nations history and have time to browse its cafés, restaurants, and artisan shops.
Beyond Carcross, the landscape transforms dramatically as we travel through the Southern Lakes region, the surreal Tormented Valley, and up into the historic White Pass. After a photo stop at the Alaska border and the summit of the pass—3,292 feet (1,004 meters) above sea level—it’s a breathtaking descent toward the Alaskan coastline and the famous town of Skagway.
Once the gateway for thousands of stampeders during the Klondike Gold Rush, Skagway today is a beautifully preserved frontier town buzzing with life. After a guided orientation along Broadway, you’ll have approximately two hours of free time to explore shops, restaurants, museums, and the town’s striking Gold Rush-era buildings at your own pace.
We will pick you up at your hotel at 9 a.m. and head for the coast. In Carcross and Skagway, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a tasty lunch. We will aim to have you back at your hotel in Whitehorse at around 6 p.m, the perfect end to a full, scenic, and story-rich day. This tour visits:- Miles Canyon
